Marijuana addiction is probably the most common addiction in the United States. Since it is considered a completely harmless drug that many people believe should actually be legalized, millions of people routinely smoke it as a means of relaxing, overcoming nerves and anxiety, or loosening up for social occasions. Most of these people do have a true Marijuana addiction but they do not view it as a negative aspect of their life.
In fact, most people who have a Marijuana addiction believe the drug enhances their daily life and makes them a more relaxed, easy going person who others enjoy being around. They see the drug as a great asset to their social life and appreciate that they always have a way to calm down overactive nerves or simply relax after a long, hard day at work or school.
Yet, this doesn't erase the fact that Marijuana addiction is illegal. The drug is illegal in most of the United States, except for in the case of patients with serious medical conditions such as cancer which can actually be helped by consistent use of medical Marijuana.
While many people believe Marijuana addiction should not be a big deal because they feel it does not victimize or hurt anyone, this is not the complete truth. In many instances a Marijuana addiction will take away the natural desire of a person to take appropriate actions and live out their life fully. Since it slows down their system and puts them in an extremely relaxed, mellow mood, they are more likely to sit on the couch all afternoon than they are to go to school or work and carry out their daily responsibilities.
This doesn't happen in every case, as some people with a Marijuana addiction problem are able of carrying on with their life in this relaxed state without negative consequences. Yet, there are just as many people who use the drug and end up losing jobs, dropping out of school, or selling drugs in dangerous situations in order to get more Marijuana for themselves.
There is no specific age group that falls into the trap of Marijuana addiction. Its use spans every age group and is equally prevalent amount all races, genders, and other social categories. School teachers, young school kids, and professional businessmen alike are equally at risk of developing a Marijuana addiction.
The problem with Marijuana addiction is that most people do not view it as a real problem. They may see it as a benefit to their life as mentioned above, or they may simply argue that it doesn’t have any serious health consequences and isn’t hurting anyone. They will also argue that the good feelings it gives them far outweigh the risk of being caught and going to jail.
Part of this is because the laws against leisure Marijuana use tend to be quite lax at this time. While there are heavier charges for possessing larger amounts of the drug or selling it to others, the light punishments currently in place have done very little to curb the rampant spread of use among Marijuana addicts all over the country.
