There are many new types of drug addictions surfacing in our modern world, but crack addiction is one that has had a grip on societies around the world for many, many generations. Since it has been around for so long and nearly every community has dealt with crack addicts at some point, there has been desensitization to this problem. Yet, dependence on crack is just as troubling and just as deadly today as it ever was in the past.

When most people hear the word "crack addict" they are not shocked as someone years ago would have been. Crack addiction has been around for so long that it almost seems like a naturally ingrained part of our society. It does have a very negative reputation and there is a general consensus that crack addiction is not a good or desirable thing, but it also isn't something that most people take all that seriously anymore.

That is quite sad, considering crack addiction continues to rob the lives of millions of people year after year. It takes mothers and fathers away from children that desperately need them and it removes what otherwise would be productive, active working citizens from communities that need their input.

The stigma for crack addition today is that these abusers are low lives, trash on the curb, or homeless beggers to be ignored by the rest of society. There are routine jokes that pass among friends, online, and even on some popular comedy TV shows that reflect the lighthearted, negative opinion that society has formed against those suffering from crack addition.

All of this makes it very difficult for someone with a crack addiction to overcome their problem and make their way back into society as a productive, happy citizen. The disconnection that often occurs between the addict and their loved ones during the course of the crack addiction is hard enough to overcome, but the laid-back, careless response that comes from others on the subject can make it even more difficult.

Trying to move forward and contribute positive things to their loved ones and to society as  whole in the present time is one of the most difficult obstacles for those recovering from this type of addiction. Putting the addiction in the past and moving forward is extremely important if they are to ever escape the label of “crack addict” and lead a normal, happy life. Yet, that can be difficult when everyone around you knows about the devastation of the addiction.

Crack addition to this day has one of the worst reputations out of all the types of drug abuse.  There are drug users who pop pills and dangerously drive their children around town while high, but they do not get the same type of label on their heads that many former crack addicts have to deal with. This is largely due to the desensitization that has occurred in societies that have been dealing with crack and similear drugs for many generations. It simply is nothing new, though it remains one of the most devastating addictions to survive as well as one of the  hardest to completely overcome.
