Those who seek treatment will find it and come to believe there is hope in "A New Day" How is Alcohol Addiction Defined?

How do you know when someone you love has a real alcohol addiction? There is no question that the consequences suffered by addicts in the long term can be quite devastating, both in terms of severed relationships and life threatening accidents. Yet, many people find it difficult to determine when someone has a real alcohol addiction and when they should take action to help them.

If you fail to recognize alcohol addiction in time, tragedy is sure to follow. There may be an accident that ends in death or they could lose a job, a wife, or even lose custody of their children. These things happen every single day to people suffering with alcohol addiction, but there are also risks of being alienated once you try to step in to help someone with an alcohol problem.

That is why so many people put an intervention or confrontation off. They are afraid they will cause this person they love to turn their back or cut them out of their life. This is where it is important to understand the definition and signs of a real problem with alcohol addiction. If you know for sure that there is a problem, then you have no choice but to take action. Their life could be on the line if you don't!

First, seriously consider whether any of the following circumstances currently apply to the person in question:

*

Alcohol or encounters involving drinking seem to be more important than most loved ones or their old favorite pastimes.

* Drinking has interfered with their daily life in some way, whether it is their job or their family life, or some other obligation.
* They are drinking at inappropriate times or showing up to social functions or work in a drunken state.
* They regularly have large amounts of alcohol in their home or vehicle or are always purchasing more.
* They sometimes or oftentimes hide alcohol from others, or drink heavily in secret.

Basically, any drinking behaviors that occur on a regular basis and interfere with the person's daily life can safely be classified as alcohol addiction. The best time to take action is when you see the very first signs of a problem. The problem is most people do not realize there is a real alcohol addiction happening until it has become solidly ingrained or severe consequences have already occurred.

The initial signs may be just one or two of those listed above, but they may be so faint you aren't certain whether it is something to worry about or not. That is the time to start paying attention as the other signs of alcohol addiction can come on quickly and lead to life-shattering consequences.

It is understandable to question your right to intervene in someone else's life or to fear how they will react to your concern, but if you really think there is legitimate alcohol addiction involved, you have to step up to help them out. The sooner you take action the more time you may have to get help before it is too late.
